Oxford Very Short Introduction Series - Marine Science Collection
This student project consisted of re-designing the cover for the client, Oxford University Press.
My design employs a cohesive visual language that captures the nature of marine ecosystems through fluid hand-drawn illustrations in an interconnected pattern. Using a sophisticated blue and white color palette, the covers feature flowing, organic patterns that evoke ocean currents and water movement. Each cover incorporates carefully selected marine life silhouettes—from sharks and rays to coral formations and sea creatures—positioned within flowing white spaces that create natural reading areas for the typography.
The design successfully balances scientific authority with visual appeal, making complex marine science accessible to general readers while maintaining the academic credibility expected of the Oxford brand. The interconnected pattern system allows each title to stand alone while clearly belonging to a unified collection, reflecting the interconnected nature of ocean systems themselves.
The typography is clean and hierarchical, with the series branding, author names, and titles clearly distinguished through scale and positioning. The overall effect creates covers that are both educational and aesthetically striking, appealing to both academic and popular science audiences.
